Ultra Violet Lip

Ever want a lip that looks as bright in the dark as it does in the daytime? I (and all you other Seattleites) compete daily with the grey. The new Stila After Glow lip color makes it so that I don't have to. Sold online and in select Sephora stores, the lip comes in 4 colors (displayed below) and is packed with florescent pigments that are 3 times brighter than regular lip pigments. When the sun sets, black-light sensitive pigments are revealed under UV light. These pigments also show up beautifully in flash photography.

On the Line

I love eye liner. Eye liner is almost always used to accent performance makeup, but with a little practice it can become a part of every girl's daily beauty routine. I first started practicing with liner at around 14, when I was asked to apply it on myself and the other girls on my high school drill and pom team. I hated it. It seemed impossible to draw a straight line on a curved lid and to keep it in one place without smudging it all over my eye. Wings? Forget it.

After a while I became so frustrated with it that I gave up. I only applied liner to my inner rims until my senior year of high school. In college, inspired by other fashion forward girls with perfect liner (my roommate), I practiced HARD and finally got it down. With that said, the number one rule to eye liner is practice. A close second is tracing and wings/cat eye come in at third.

Liner Tutorial:
1. Begin at the inner corner of the eye closest to the bridge of the nose and trace the upper lash line in one solid movement all the way to the outer corner of the eye. STOP.
2. Angle brush diagonally and draw a line upwards from outer corner towards the brow. Line if extended should be about half an inch from the brow (less to make eyes look closer together, more to draw eyes further apart).
3. Trace the same line at a slightly higher angle, making the two lines meet at the outermost point. Fill in space in between lines to create a cat eye/wing.

Liner Wars

ARDENCY INN PUNKER in jet black. The world's baddest eye liner is indeed very bad. I'm not a fan, but it doesn't mean you won't be. This liner is great for drawing paper thin lines. DO NOT use this liner if you want heavy pigmentation. I traced the line several times and only got a dark grey.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Liner in jet black. My personal favorite. This liner's felt tip applicator is extra fine and stays wet with liquid for precise drawing. The liner does not smudge and is easy to trace over. Cap it like a pen and take it with you on-the-go. For the girl that needs a perfect line FAST.

Kat Von D Autograph Liner in Puro Amor. Far better than the Kat Von D Tattoo liner pens, line goes on smooth and lasts for hours. Water resistant, but not waterproof. The brush and pot take me back to the days of my first eye liner.

MAC Kohl Power Eye Pencil in Feline. I am a Sephora girl so I can't commit to the whole MAC line, but I am in love with this pencil. My best friend gave this to me as a birthday gift (after she noticed I'd been stealing hers) and I've been wearing it everyday since. Use this pencil to line your inner rims for an intense black and a lasting smokey look. Don't forget to line the upper inner rims as well. This takes practice. Don't take an eye out.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink. An average liner for daily use. Easy to use with Bobbi's ultra-fine liner brush. Wet the brush for even easier application. I did have to trace the line a couple of times to achieve a jet black, but the liner doesn't clump together. WARNING: This is not an easy liner to draw wings with.

PRO TIP

Dry your eyeliner quickly by taking a blowdryer to your face. Gives your liner more hold.

Girls HBO: Makeup + Outfits

“Girls” has taken a lot of flack lately for not expressing enough diversity within its characters, but I believe that the very diversity this show is accused of lacking can be found within the personalities of each of the 4 protagonists.

Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath

Hannah, played by the show’s creator Lena Dunham, has found a voice within her writing but not so much in real life. Hannah struggles to make rent and publish her first e-book within one month all while falling in and out of love, experimenting with cocaine and trying not to murder her gay ex-boyfriend Elijah. And dare I mention her crazy and OCD “counting” habit? She may be off to the looney bin after shoving a Q-tip down both her ears in last week’s episode, but I can still relate.

“I could be a drug addict. Do you realize how lucky you are?” – Hannah, after her parents cut her off financially.

1. The Essex Messenger from Madewell $134.50 2. Going Dotty Shirt Dress from Nasty Gal $60 3. Gipsy Baroque Brocade Back-Seam Tight from UO $14 4. You Know It Belt from Princess Polly 5. 4. Hole Punch Skimmer flats from Madewell $84.50 6. Urban Decay Naked 1 Palette $50

Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson

Jessa is the free spirit of the show and gets married at the end of the first season. No one is surprised when the marriage ends; the guy is a total POS and obsessed with $$$. After a visit to Poughkeepsie to see her dysfunctional father, Jessa disappears, leaving Hannah to find her own way back to the big apple. This girl just wants to be loved for whom she is, a Bohemian hippie who did a crazy amount of drugs in her single year at college.

“I cannot be smoted. I am unsmoteable.” – Jessa, post-ex sex.

1. Mink Pink Sunset Hat from Princess Polly $42.46 2. Pyramid Ring Silver from Beginning Boutique $24.53 3. Colourblind Jumpsuit from Beginning Boutique $76.64 4. Technicolor Palette from MUFE $45 5. Black Velvet Jeffrey Campbell Lita Platform from Nasty Gal $162

Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels

Marnie makes the mistakes that I most frequently make in life; holding on to things for too long out of fear of letting go and jumping into things far too quickly. She’s smart and witty, but a little lost, especially when it comes to her ex-boyfriend of many years, Charlie and her brief affair with modern artist Booth Jonathan. Can we all just mutually cringe at Marnie’s terrible Kanye cover? And the god-awful Charlie and Marnie sex scene after? I can’t wait for her to find a hot girl to date (Jessa, anyone?).

“ I just wish someone would tell me, like, this is how the rest of your life should look.” – Marnie, on being fired from her art gallery job and becoming a hostess.

1. White Peplum Top from H&M 2. Christian DIOR 5 Couleurs Palette in Gris Gris $60 3. Talula Starboard Shorts from Aritzia $50 4. Unisex Red Suspender from American Apparel $18 5. Berry Black Rose Headband from Princess Polly $37.74 6. Bobbie Oxfords in Patent from Madewell $124.99

Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro

Oh Shoshanna who is sooo innocent at the beginning of Girls, loses her virginity to Ray, who has about as much of a clue what he’s doing with the rest of his life as she does. A shopping addict, perpetual worrier and conversationalist, it’s hard to keep up with Shosh. Her hookup with a random doorman caused a slight rift in her relationship last episode, but I think Ray and Shosh will make amends and stay together for a while. In my opinion, Shoshanna can get by on her random outbursts alone.

“I’ve literally been here for two hours and I haven’t spoken to anybody. I’m so happy to see you I could murder you.” – Shoshanna, to Jessa after accidentally smoking crack instead of pot.

1. Only Hope Dress from Princess Polly $188.73 2. Downtown Earrings from Princess Polly $14.16 3. Collection Etta Sequin Pumps from J Crew $350 4. Sweethearts Blush from Too Faced $29 5. Boudoir Eyes from Too Faced $36

Candy for Easter

Candy Colored Nails for an Early Spring

Renowned British beauty brand Ilamasqua has released their 2013 spring collection in some US Sephora stores, including downtown Seattle. The Speckled Nail Varnish line comes in five colors including tan, lilac, green, blue and pink (shown below).

These colors remind me of childhood Easters spent in my backyard searching for brightly colored eggs. The black specks make the bright green, pink, blue and purple tone stand out, although I could go without the tan, which kind of reminds me of a tan gone south.

Julep, yet another independent and chic nail line, this time East Coast based and founded by Jane Park, also released its spring line consisting mainly of pastels.

Rock Candy Nail Glaze in Wendy watermelon, Carol coral, Marie lavender and Angelica mint.

We all volunteered to sacrifice our hearts for Jennifer Lawrence in the previous Hunger Games movie. Catching Fire is due out on the 22nd of November. Katniss takes a bow and arrow into the woods again and meets Finnick Odair (played by Sam Claflin), the feisty and hot young man from District 4.

Silver Linings Playbook was one of the first movies to reveal a true-to-life couple...Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams ain't got nothin' on this. It’s a guarantee that anyone will love Jennifer and Bradley Cooper, dare I forget Brad in The Hangover, sporting a handsome and sexy bestie vibe as Phil. I still dream of running my fingers through his bro hair.

Some of the my favorite parts of the movie come from the bipolar protagonist and at times mentally unhinged ex-husband who believes his cheating wife Nikki will come back to him.

Nouveau Nails

You could say I'm in love with painting my ring finger a different color, but that would be a severe understatement.

Brand & Stylist Overview

Let me just begin by saying that my love for Kat Von D has only grown since I joined the Sephora USA Team. I guess you could say Kat is my idol. She doesn't care what other people think of her. She does what she wants, she does it well and she does it with dignity.

There's a lot to be said about a woman who isn't afraid to sport facial tattoos in public. Even my mother would raise an eyebrow at those, but Kat doesn't care. Kat has confidence and, like she so profoundly put it in her Sephora "Adora" Tutorial Video, "Confidence is the sexiest attribute a woman can have."

My Kat Purchase

Starry Eyes Makeup Palette with 4 eyeshadow trios in Felix, Helmut, Lohner and Requiem, and 2 liquid lipsticks in Lolita and Adora.

Me, sporting the Requiem eyeshadow trio, Black Metal Love autograph liner and Lolita liquid lipstick.

My lips covered in Adora liquid lip.

5 Kat Facts:

1. Kat's Adora lipstick was made to look like the red, shiny wrapping paper on a Christmas present.
2. First tattoo was an Old English "J" on Kat's ankle, first tattoo crafted was a Misfits skull.
3. Kat loves candles, taxidermy, fast cars, shoes and Deadmau5 (they're engaged!).
4. This woman is busy! She's booked completely with a long waiting list for tattoos, has an art gallery, a clothing line and published a book called, "The Tattoo Chronicles".
5. Kat tat recipients include Lady GaGa, Beyonce, Steve-O, Jared Leto and Jenna Jameson.
