“Girls” has taken a lot of flack lately for not expressing enough diversity within its characters, but I believe that the very diversity this show is accused of lacking can be found within the personalities of each of the 4 protagonists.
Hannah, played by the show’s creator Lena Dunham, has found a voice within her writing but not so much in real life. Hannah struggles to make rent and publish her first e-book within one month all while falling in and out of love, experimenting with cocaine and trying not to murder her gay ex-boyfriend Elijah. And dare I mention her crazy and OCD “counting” habit? She may be off to the looney bin after shoving a Q-tip down both her ears in last week’s episode, but I can still relate.
“I could be a drug addict. Do you realize how lucky you are?” – Hannah, after her parents cut her off financially.

Jessa is the free spirit of the show and gets married at the end of the first season. No one is surprised when the marriage ends; the guy is a total POS and obsessed with $$$. After a visit to Poughkeepsie to see her dysfunctional father, Jessa disappears, leaving Hannah to find her own way back to the big apple. This girl just wants to be loved for whom she is, a Bohemian hippie who did a crazy amount of drugs in her single year at college.
“I cannot be smoted. I am unsmoteable.” – Jessa, post-ex sex.

Marnie makes the mistakes that I most frequently make in life; holding on to things for too long out of fear of letting go and jumping into things far too quickly. She’s smart and witty, but a little lost, especially when it comes to her ex-boyfriend of many years, Charlie and her brief affair with modern artist Booth Jonathan. Can we all just mutually cringe at Marnie’s terrible Kanye cover? And the god-awful Charlie and Marnie sex scene after? I can’t wait for her to find a hot girl to date (Jessa, anyone?).
“ I just wish someone would tell me, like, this is how the rest of your life should look.” – Marnie, on being fired from her art gallery job and becoming a hostess.

Oh Shoshanna who is sooo innocent at the beginning of Girls, loses her virginity to Ray, who has about as much of a clue what he’s doing with the rest of his life as she does. A shopping addict, perpetual worrier and conversationalist, it’s hard to keep up with Shosh. Her hookup with a random doorman caused a slight rift in her relationship last episode, but I think Ray and Shosh will make amends and stay together for a while. In my opinion, Shoshanna can get by on her random outbursts alone.
“I’ve literally been here for two hours and I haven’t spoken to anybody. I’m so happy to see you I could murder you.” – Shoshanna, to Jessa after accidentally smoking crack instead of pot.
